Brooklyn: Plain as Black and White

I probably haven’t shot in black and white since high school photo class. And honestly I thought it was just a little too cliche and or nostalgic for my taste. It just always reminded me of 16 and 17 year olds running around with their dads camera thinking that they’re artists because they shot a few rolls of black and white film and got an “A” on their report card. But then again, I was one of those kids… It certainly takes more than just a film type to master this great medium but it has to start somewhere.

So I guess I would call this a little throwback to my roots. No worrying about color saturation and hue’s, no cross processing or tweaking. Just concentrating on composition and subject. Black and white simplifies and slows things down for the photographer that is constantly thinking about things other than what is in front of him or her.

These are great! I especially like them as a series.

I like the challenge of shooting B&W sometimes … Instead of looking for colors, I have to train myself to look for contrast, lighting, etc. Sort of a nice change of pace now and then.

Thanks Jess! I totally agree. Sometimes just concentrating on the light and the lines in a scene, can be so refreshing.
